Trauma

Trauma in Chinese Medicine

Trauma is the emotional response to a shocking event over time. According to TCM, an emotional shock caused by sudden grief, sadness, disappointment, anger, fear, terror or even sudden happiness can scatter the Qi and leave the person feeling traumatised and out of control. The shock can be emotional or physical, such as a pregnancy loss or a surgical operation. The Shen (Spirit of the Heart), is affected by the shock and may temporarily ‘separate’ from the body and no longer be housed in the Heart.

Acupuncture and Trauma

One of the significant benefits of Acupuncture for emotional trauma is it helps shift the autonomic nervous system, regulating the body’s unconscious actions, out of the sympathetic nervous system (“fight, flight, or freeze” response) into the parasympathetic nervous system (“rest and digest” mode).
Acupuncture provides fantastic relief from the assault of stress hormones, allowing the body to rest and begin the process of healing.
Acupuncture helps restore balance to the mind and body and employs many techniques to bring extreme emotional and physical responses back into balance.
